Sherrie is famous for making copies of photographs.

She especially loved to copy artworks made by the male artists who were responsible for taking up all the fame in art history. Yet for this one she picked a sculpture instead. This famous artwork was originally made by either Marcel Duchamp or Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, depending on which theory you've heard. I am of course talking about the famous pissoir that shook up the art world at the beginning of the 20th century. The original fountain was called a "ready-made," which means the artists bought the urinal, signed it, and called it “art”. At the time, it was obviously unheard of and raised tons of questions on originality and authenticity.

Sherrie took it to the next level and remade the ready-made. That was her thing, but in the case of Fountain,  it's even more complicated. The original 1917 urinal got lost, but luckily Alfred Stieglitz made a photo of it. Years and years later, Duchamp ordered some copies which were based on the photograph. He signed them, et voila, new art! Again, many years later, Sherrie makes a copy of Duchamp’s copy and casts it in bronze. Newer art!

Also, the shadow in the fountain kind of looks like Buddha, hence the name.
