Like something out of a David Lynch/Marvel Comic mash-up, this highly bizarre sculpture by Stephen Birch is unsettling to say the least.

I know it’s got Spiderman, but I can only recommend this as ‘family friendly’ if your family enjoys creeping the hell out of the children. Or if your mom’s got a Morticia Addams thing going on.

Firstly, what is going on with the horrifying shrunken head attached to an arm popping out of the wall?  Life has clearly gotten the best of our little friend, with his sunken eyes and bald head like a stress ball that’s been squeezed one too many times.  His beard looks like it’s made of impossibly long pubes. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

And don’t even get me started on Birch’s Spiderman, which definitely resembles the poorly drawn Spoderman meme more than a charming Peter Parker. The familiarity of the figure is tainted because everything from his costume to his bulgy body is slightly distorted. You know when you see an off-brand Spongebob Squarepants painted on a preschool wall or a warped Dora the Explorer piñata looking down at you with a tortured expression from the rafters of your local grocery store?

"Heeeelllpp meee," they seem to beg.

It’s how our favorite characters would look on an acid trip! At least Spidey’s bubble butt is looking good.  And visitors agree: this is one of the most photographed pieces in the MCA’s collection.
