Self-Portrait [Romaine Brooks]

Marguerite Elliot

It’s all about the hat, an accessory that should be in every well-dressed dyke’s closet.

Brooks greatly admired the artist James Whistler and adapted the same limited color palette as him for this self portrait. In all her paintings, she uses only white, grey, and black with an occasional small dab of red.

The red ribbon of the Legion of Honor on her lapel signifies the prestigious Cross of France. See her painting “La France Croisée" for the full story.
