Mona Hatoum decided that furniture is too comfortable and familiar.

She wanted to shake things up a bit, and made this wheelchair with knives for handles.  Since furniture is so closely related to our bodies (especially a wheelchair, a literal replacement for bodily function) you get an immediate visceral response from looking at this.  Like a bloody scene out of Saw, I can imagine grasping the blades only to be sliced.  Ouch.

There’s also a metaphor in here somewhere about caretaking and relationships, dependency and pain.  Horror movies tend to be light on meaningful interpretations though, and this is just too perfect a prop.
