The Guardian calls them huge “polyps”, but we’re not that PC.

The year 1966 had been a tough one for Eva. Not only did her marriage to fellow artist Tom Doyle end, but she lost her father as well. Tom had made her move to Germany with him in 1964, but after their marriage ended Eva returned to New York. She moved into her beloved Bowery studio near Canal Street. This studio was a small hut-like apartment on the on the top of the building, also know as apartment 4S. (Right now LOMEX Gallery is doing art shows in Eva’s old studio, pretty rad.)

For Eva, Canal Street was one of her favorites in the city because there were many industrial supply stores. She picked up sculpting during her time in Germany, and loved to use unconventional stuff to make her sculptures. She started to gather all these unusual materials at the supply stores, like fish nets and ropes. Perfect for making sculpture that looks like balls, hanging off a wall. Her best piece Untitled or Not Yet is now on view at SFMOMA as part of Open Ended: Painting and Sculpture Since 1900. It’s a set of nine balls suspended on nails from pieces of string. Ouch? Since whoever installs the piece can make their own composition, so the work is never the same.
