Two orphans are about to be released into the world from the Foundling Hospital.


There is much to celebrate but the whole thing is bitter sweet and emotions are kept in check.


The men are benefactors and as such deserve a spot in the painting. 


The secretary of the Hospital, John Brownlow, is sitting behind the desk with the papers. He's the artist's father and a lifer at Foundling, having entered as a baby.
