This may look like any other robust nude by Rembrandt, but it’s actually a sketch of a naked aristocrat...making it exceptionally scandalous.

The subject, Saskia van Uylenburgh, was the daughter of Friesland’s town burgomaster (aka chief magistrate and master of hamburgers). She was also the wife of a penniless little artist named Rembrandt. Though both Sasakia’s mother and father were dead by the time she married Rembrandt, it didn’t prevent the rest of her family from bestowing her with parental-type warnings against the match.

As evidenced by the fact that Saskia sat for this (and many other) nude sketches, she was willful and, like Honeybadger, she did not give a shit. She wanted Rembrandt and he wanted her (or at least her money), so they expedited the betrothal.  With almost no money of his own, Rembrandt and Saskia lived a luxurious life off of her inheritance and money borrowed from her wealthy relatives.

Ultimately, they ignored the warnings of her family; they bought expensive houses they couldn’t pay off and she scandalized her reputation by sitting for nude drawings and throwing lavish parties. She would give birth to four children, only one of whom, Titus, survived. Saskia died of tuberculosis when Titus was one. She went on supporting her husband’s irresponsible behavior even in death. Her will speculated that so long as Rembrandt did not remarry he could live off of his son’s inheritance. The obvious solution to this was to bang the wet-nurse and throw her in an asylum when she started nagging him about marriage. Bitches, amirite?

Fun fact: Asteroid 461 is named Saskia in her honor.

I think you mean specified, not speculated. Rembrandt was a celebrated artist earning well throughout his marriage to Saskia (the income from his pupils, alone, gave them enough for a rich lifestyle)
