Draftsman Robert Pruitt puts his skills together to create thoughtful images of Black Americans.

Pruitt hones together a variety of interests to portray his subjects: the divine, spirituality, science fiction, comic books, pre-colonial Africa, and Afro-futurism. His portraits are drawn on a large scale dominating the viewer.

No material is too far-fetched for Pruitt. He uses everyday liquids like coffee to stain the background of some of his portraits giving his subjects an ethereal glow, and apparently the smell of breakfast. He even takes t-shirts and soaks them in coffee before rubbing the caffeine-stained cloth on the paper. This effect creates various washes of brown necessary to show the variety of different skin hues. Pruitt fuses together various ideas, themes, and sources of inspiration, but more than anything else, it’s the energy that Pruitt is concerned with.
