There are a handful of things that every tourist who visits Amsterdam must do and the Rijksmuseum is #1.
Go on a canal boat ride, cruise around the city on a bike, relax in one of their infamous cafes, and experience some amazing art. When it comes to the arts, Amsterdam has got it on lock.
The Rijksmuseum was originally founded in the Hague, which is the government city of Holland, but was moved eight years later to Amsterdam. The museum is now located conveniently near the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum, making this a very culturally rich area of the city to visit. All three of these museums are a stones throw away from the other, so besides sore feet there isn’t much reason not to explore all three of these awesome art institutions.
The Rijksmuseum is quite extravagant. The most recent renovation alone cost over $418 million. I guess this is why Europeans pay so much more in taxes. While that seems like an exorbitant amount to me, this institution has over one million objects in their collection, so it kind of makes sense that they would need an impressively large and secure building to conserve and exhibit them. Additionally, one of the buildings of the Rijksmuseum is made of out pieces of other demolished buildings. Way to reduce, reuse, recycle, Amsterdam!
This is the most visited museum in the Netherlands and the nineteenth most visited museum in the world. So next time you're in Amsterdam put down the bong for an afternoon and head over to this one. All the cool kids are doing it.

The Rijksmuseum (
Dutch: [ˈrɛiksmyˌzeːjʏm] ⓘ) is the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history and is located in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough of Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw.
The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague on 19 November 1798 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened in 1885. On 13 April 2013, after a ten-year renovation which cost € 375 million, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix. In 2013 and 2014, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands with record numbers of 2.2 million and 2.47 million visitors. It is also the largest art museum in the country.
The museum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The museum also has a small Asian collection, which is on display in the Asian pavilion.
