If you couldn’t have guessed, the title of this museum translates to the New Gallery.

This museum exhibits German and Austrian works from the 20th century. Two close friends conceived the museum: Serge Sabarsky, an art dealer and museum exhibition organizer, and Ronald Lauder, a philanthropist and entrepreneur. Lauder used to buy art from Sabarsky at his gallery on Madison ave and they always dreamed of opening a museum to showcase the best German and Austrian art around. Sadly, Sabarsky died before theirhis dream came fruition, but Lauder decided to go ahead and create the museum as a tribute to his close friend.

It was established in 2001, making it a nice addition to New York City’s famed Museum Mile. Museum Mile is located on 5th avenue and runs from 82nd to 105th streets and currently has ten different museums on it, making this section of the famed street very culturally and artistically rich. If you are looking for a good time to visit the city, at the beginning of every June, the Museum Mile Festival takes place to increase public awareness and participation in the arts. And if for no other reason, you should totally attend this festival because it’s free! Can’t get much better than that.

Besides being located on Museum Mile, this gallery is smack dab across the street from Central Park which makes it a great destination if you are looking for a stroll near the lake or are up for a carriage ride to relax after some quality art viewing.

A lot of the work that fills these halls was confiscated and labeled as degenerate art by the Nazis. Additionally, The Neue Galerie is home to a world-renowned painting by Gustav Klimt, Adele Bloch-Bauer I. She is a vision in glittering gold. Here is a video of the director of the Neue Galerie talking about this iconic work. They also have lots of cute pictures of Gustav and his wife...and more importantly, his cat.
