And then the sh*t hits the fan in the fourth painting of William Hogarth’s eight-part series, "A Rake’s Progress."

On the way to a high society event, the nobly dressed Tom the Rake is arrested for unpaid debts. In the confusion, he lunges forward with his mouth wide open and drops his fancy walking stick. It's a bonanza for a street kid, who wisely grabs the falling wealth. To make a terrible day worse, some fool is pouring lamp oil on Tom’s wig.

Love, however, overcomes everything, and the jilted-fiancé from The Heir (painting one), is there to bail him out. She is offering the arresting officers a small purse with her hard-earned earnings as a hat maker.
