Don’t you wish your mom had sat with you in this gentle and peaceful way, shielding you from the late afternoon Mexican sun? It's salt of the earth; the most basic tie we all have, mother and child.

It’s possible that this was the sculpture that won and lost Zúñiga the first prize in a big sculpture competition back in 1935. The naked native lady and child in La Maternidad created an uproar among the polite ‘art loving’ public. The spineless Ministry of Culture responded by taking back the award. 

 

Zúñiga still went on to become one of Latin America’s greatest modern sculptors.
