What came first, the raw chicken sewed to Sarah Lucas’ underwear or the fried eggs on her boobs.

It was the eggs. But an more apt question would be what came first, Lucas’ badassery in art or her humor with it? The daughter of a milkman and a house-cleaner, Lucas was far from a spoiled little girl. She got over the whole school thing by the time she was sixteen years old and got into a little trouble, having an abortion at 17. She decided to turn things around by going to Working Men’s College from 1982-3, followed by London College of Printing and then Goldsmith’s College where she earned her BFA in 1987. And from there stardom!

She was basically the queen of the 90s Young British Artist scene - so punk, so angsty, so cool. She began exhibiting with some no name artist named Damien Hirst and the two became good friends. Lucas has even said that she wouldn’t be where she is today without him and his work though she doesn’t even like it that much. He does have some douchey tendencies.

It seemed that Lucas was going to peak in her 90s works with fried egg boobs, and lots of different vagina/penis representations, but like a fancy cheese, she has only gotten better since then. She now lives out in the country with her boyfriend, the artist Julian Simmons, making art and plaster casts of his penis. It’s a simple life, but it’s a good one.

Whether it’s a pair of fried eggs on her boobs or a raw chicken sewn to the front of her underwear, Sarah Lucas is not afraid of a little humor in her work!

And for that, we love her.

She’ll often use familiar objects like food to comment on gender roles and the objectification of women’s bodies. Don’t feel left out though guys, she’s made giant penises out of two melons and a cucumber, too. And one of her most recent photographs is a naked guy with a bottle of milk and two biscuits in his crotch.  Though the official title is Get Off Your Horse and Drink Your Milk, we're going to call it “milk and COCKies” and there's nothing you can do about it.
